Madekwe was raised in an ethnically diverse family. Her father and mother are both English. Her family was raised in the south of a London community estate, where she attended The Brit School at age 14. In London, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in which her acting diploma was awarded. At school, she was a part-time actor in numerous stage plays, such as King Henry V's princess Katherine or Wuthering Heights.
Madekwe started her acting career with the movie Storm Damage. Since then, she has made guest appearances in Teachers, Doctors, Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her debut film as a performer is her role in the Woody Allen 2007 film Cassandra's Dream. She starred with Colin Farrell & Ewan MacGregor. In the following year she portrayed Elisha (a BBC Three drama-pilot) in West 10 LDN. Additionally she was a part of Trexx as Ollie and six episodes in Flipside. In 2008 she landed Bambi's part on the ITV2 Drama series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. The actress was on two series, 2 and 3. Madekwe made an appearance in the Comedy film How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. She was also in Little Sweet Thing, by Roy Williams, and Flight Path which was written composed by David Watson.
Madekwe was officially introduced to her US debut on The Beautiful Life in 2009. The show ran just two episodes on The CW, and was later removed from the air. Ashley Davenport was her role in ABC's drama Revenge. Following her appearance as a regular on the initial two seasons the show was announced late May 2013 that she would depart the series following her appearance on the pilot episode from the 3rd season. In 2014 and 2016, she starred in the role of Tituba the television series Salem. Madekwe and her boyfriend of many years, Iddo Goldenberg, were wed in June of 2012. Alongside Secret Diary of a Call Girl they have also worked in tandem on Salem and also he played a part alongside her in that show.

Ashley Leggat, an actress that was nominated two times for the Gemini Award, comes from the large Hamilton family. She joined her parents, Roy and Patty and four older brothers: Rob, Brett, and twins Todd and Bram. Ashley's siblings, who are all athletes, play baseball in summers and played hockey during winter.
